How we design

The design starts at the site.

A good pool design begins with the block, not a catalogue. The fall of the land, the view, the way the house opens to the garden, and how the pool will actually be used all shape the drawing before a single line is set. Because we build in concrete and engineer the shell in house, the design is free of the fixed shapes a moulded pool is limited to.

That freedom is the point of designing in concrete. Any shape, any depth, a raised spa, a shallow ledge, a lap length set along a boundary, an infinity or glass edge held over a view. The pool is drawn to sit with the architecture rather than the architecture bending around a shell that came off a truck.

What the design decides

Shape and placement

Where the pool sits, how it meets the house and garden, and the shape that suits the block, from a clean rectangle to a free form.

Edges and levels

Infinity edges, glass edges, wet edges and raised walls, all designed against the view and engineered to hold dead level.

Depth and use

A shallow ledge for children, a lap length for swimming, a deeper end for diving, an integrated spa. The design follows how you will live with it.

Finish and palette

Interior colour, coping, waterline tile and surrounds chosen to match the house, so the pool reads as part of one considered palette.

Pool design questions.

How do you design a swimming pool?

We start at the site, not a catalogue. The design follows the block, the house, the fall of the land and how the pool will be used, then the shape, depth, edge and finish are drawn around that. Because we build in concrete and engineer the shell in house, the design is not limited to a set of moulded shapes. The same team then builds what was drawn.

Do you design and build the pool, or just design it?

Both, together. Wright Pools is a design-and-build concrete pool contractor, so the same company that draws the pool engineers and constructs it. That avoids the gap between a design and a builder who then says it cannot be done. One team owns the pool from the first sketch to handover.

Can you design a pool for a small or sloping block?

Yes, and that is where design matters most. A concrete pool can be shaped to a narrow courtyard, cantilevered over a fall, or piered onto sandstone on a steep block. Difficult Sydney sites are the ones a bespoke concrete design is made for, rather than trying to fit a fixed shape into an awkward space.

Do you work from an architect's plans?

Yes. Much of our work is designed alongside the home's architect and landscape designer, and we are recommended by leading Sydney practices. We take the architect's intent and engineer a shell that holds to it, so the pool is built as designed rather than cut back to suit construction.
