On the rooftops of a residential development in The Rocks, we built a family of pools and spas rather than a single shell. Each terrace carries its own form: a raised pool with curved cast steps, a circular sunken spa, twin ovals set into the deck, and an elevated lap pool running above the laneways. Every one of them looks out at the Harbour Bridge, and several catch the Opera House too.

The surrounds were formed as soft, organic curves and finished in pale render, so each pool reads as a single sculpted object sitting on the roof. Interiors are sea-green glass mosaic that shifts with the sky, with flush hatches concealing the covers and timber bench seating built into the wide coping. Pouring free-form concrete shells this exact, several storeys up in the middle of the oldest streets in Sydney, is the kind of work five decades of commercial building prepares you for.
