Building in Mosman

A pool for the harbour peninsula.

Mosman sits on a peninsula between Middle Harbour and the main harbour. Level garden blocks run along the ridge, and the streets fall away in sandstone toward Balmoral, Chowder Bay and The Spit. One suburb can ask for a long lap pool in a flat back garden or a shell cut into rock above the water.

We walk the block, read the access, the ground and the light, and draw a concrete shell that belongs there. Because the pool is formed in place, it can be sized to the garden, set against a wall or turned to face the harbour.

Our Belrose yard is on the same side of the harbour, so Mosman is close to home for our supervisors. One Wright supervisor stays on your project from excavation to handover.

Mosman project

The Hastings Residence.

The brief for the Hastings Residence was a pool the family would swim in every day before school. Long enough for laps, deep enough to dive, and shallow enough at one end to teach a child to swim. No water features and no raised edges.

We poured a 14m concrete shell into the level garden, with a graded floor running from the shallow end to the deep end and a bench seat across the full width of the shallow end. A bluestone surround keeps it quiet. It has been swum in every morning since handover.

It is a good example of what Mosman gardens suit: a pool built for use, drawn to the exact length the family wanted rather than the nearest stock size.
