Concrete Pool Builder Mosman

Building in Mosman

A pool for the harbour peninsula.

Mosman sits on a peninsula between Middle Harbour and the main harbour. Level garden blocks run along the ridge, and the streets fall away in sandstone toward Balmoral, Chowder Bay and The Spit. One suburb can ask for a long lap pool in a flat back garden or a shell cut into rock above the water.

We walk the block, read the access, the ground and the light, and draw a concrete shell that belongs there. Because the pool is formed in place, it can be sized to the garden, set against a wall or turned to face the harbour.

Our Belrose yard is on the same side of the harbour, so Mosman is close to home for our supervisors. One Wright supervisor stays on your project from excavation to handover.

Local conditions

What building in Mosman involves.

01

Ground

Sandstone sits close to the surface across much of Mosman. The shell is formed in place and engineered for the rock it sits on.

02

Fall of the land

Level along the ridge, dropping hard on the harbour side. Blocks that fall often suit a raised or view-facing shell.

03

Access

Narrow streets and houses built close to the boundary. We plan how plant and materials reach the back garden at the first site visit.

04

Heritage and foreshore

Mosman has heritage conservation areas and a long harbour foreshore. As a rule, a CDC is not available in either, so we check the controls before we design. Our approval guide explains why.

05

Council

Pool applications across the suburb go to Mosman Municipal Council, or to a private certifier where a CDC applies.

06

Harbour air

Salt air on the harbour side, so the fittings, interior and coping are chosen for it from day one.

Mosman pools

Drawn to the garden, not the catalogue.

Mosman gardens run from level ridge blocks to steep harbour falls, and the pool should be drawn to the one you have. On a level block that usually means a long, narrow shell built for daily swimming, with a graded floor from a shallow end to a deep end and a bench across the shallow end. On a sloping block the shell is engineered into the fall of the land and piered to the sandstone beneath it.

Either way the length is the length your garden allows, not the nearest stock size. The Castle Cove and Hunters Hill projects below show the same approach on Lower North Shore blocks.

Pool styles

What suits a Mosman block.

A

Lap pools

Long, narrow shells for the level ridge gardens, built for daily swimming.

B

Plunge pools

A courtyard plunge pool for smaller blocks and terraces, finished to the same standard as a full pool.

C

Harbour-view pools

A shell set to catch the view on the blocks that fall toward Middle Harbour and Balmoral.

D

Pool and spa

A spa poured as part of the same concrete shell, so the water lines stay continuous.

Frequently asked

Mosman pool questions.

Do you build pools in Mosman?

Yes. Wright Pools builds concrete pools in Mosman and across the Lower North Shore. We are based in Belrose and have built pools across Sydney since 1968.

Do you build fibreglass pools in Mosman?

No. We build only in steel-reinforced concrete, drawn to the block. If you are weighing the two, our concrete vs fibreglass comparison sets out where each one earns its place, including where fibreglass comes out ahead.

Can you build a lap pool in a Mosman back garden?

Yes. A concrete shell is formed on site, so a lap pool is drawn to the exact length the garden allows rather than a stock size, with a graded floor from a shallow end to a deep end.

Can you build on a harbour-front block?

Yes. Harbour blocks in Mosman often fall toward the water and sit on sandstone. A concrete shell is formed in place, so it can be engineered for the rock and set to face the view. We built on a similar harbour headland at Pulpit Point.
