Building in the Eastern Suburbs
Pools in the Eastern Suburbs go onto sandstone headlands above the harbour, onto the roofs of apartment buildings, and into long, narrow gardens behind terraces. Most projects come through an architect, and the pool is seen from the house every day.
We have built across the Eastern Suburbs since 1968, from a rooftop pool at Darling Point to a lap pool and spa in Bellevue Hill. Each one starts with a site visit to read the ground, the access and the outlook. The concrete shell is then drawn to that block, not picked from a range.
On architect-led work we like to be on the drawings early. For the MK Residence in Bellevue Hill we were involved nine months before excavation, so the coping line, the spa and the spillway were settled with the architect and landscape architect well before anyone dug. One Wright supervisor then runs the build from excavation to handover.
Local conditions
Suburb by suburb
Darling Point sits high above the harbour, and both our pools here are built around the view. The Darling Point Residence is a dark-tiled pool with its edge facing the moorings and stone coping run flush to the timber deck. At Mona Road we built a D-shaped rooftop pool in green glass mosaic, its straight side held by a single run of frameless glass over the city skyline.
Bellevue Hill has given us two lap pools on quite different briefs. The Bauer Residence is a clean rectangle set flush into a sandstone terrace, with a spa squared off at one end and poured as part of the same shell. The MK Residence is a long, narrow shell on a tight block, with an integrated spa, a spillway facing the house and a dark glass mosaic interior.
Our Vaucluse pool sits in a level garden behind the house, screened on every side by mature planting. The shell, coping and paving levels were set together so the stone runs to the water line, and the terrace opens straight onto a poolside pavilion.
The Gupta block falls away to the east, so the lap pool sits high with its far wall open to the sky. It is lined in deep blue glass mosaic, with sandstone coping tying it back to the terrace and wall spouts feeding it from the garden side.
The Profile Residence garden is long and narrow, so the pool runs its full length in front of an existing sandstone wall. A water blade set into the wall feeds the surface and gives the courtyard its sound.
Double Bay, Point Piper, Rose Bay and Woollahra share the same harbour-side ground: sandstone, blocks that fall to the water, tight streets and heritage controls. We build across all of them the same way, reading the block first and drawing the shell to suit it.
